An NBA executive said the Cavaliers, in a trade expected to be completed later today, finally have acquired a top-level point guard in executing a six-player, three-team deal.
The Milwaukee Bucks traded point guard Mo Williams to the Cavs in exchange for the expiring contracts of guard Damon Jones and forward Joe Smith. As part of the deal, the Bucks will receive Jones and Oklahoma City point guard Luke Ridnour. Oklahoma City acquires Smith and Bucks forward Desmond Mason. Oklahoma City also will send swingman Adrian Griffin to the Bucks. Williams scored 17.2 points per game with the Bucks last season. He averaged 6.3 assists in 66 games, shooting 48 percent from the field, 86 percent from the free-throw line. He was drafted out of the University of Alabama by the Utah J*** in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft. Williams is coming off three strong seasons with the Bucks, where he established himself as one of the league's better offensive point guards. He is known for his ability to break down defenses off the dribble. The Cavs are taking on significant salary with this move. Williams has five years and $43 million left on a contract that he signed last summer. He'll make $8.5 million this season and owns a player option for 2012-13 at $8.5 million. The Cavs showed interest in him last year, but he resigned with the Bucks. Williams will likely be the starting point guard, which leaves restricted free agent Delonte West without much bargaining power in his protracted contract negotiations with the team. Sources said the Cavs still want to bring West back but this increases the chances that he will take the qualifying offer of $2.8 million for one season. The loss of Smith is expected to be made up by rookie forward J.J. Hickson, the Cavs' first-round draft choice. He impressed the Cavs during summer-league play last month. Jones played in 67 games for the Cavs last season, averaging 19 minutes and 6.5 points. He played three years for the Cavs and likely will be remembered most for his game-winning shot against the Washington Wizards in the 2006 playoffs. Smith, who was acquired in the blockbuster deal last February from the Chicago Bulls, averaged 8.1 points, five rebounds and 21.5 minutes in 27 games for the Cavs. http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/26919019.html Welp, Cavs just became 3 or 4 in the East. ------------------------------------------------- Best 2 guard in the game + best rookie in the game = Miami Heat basketball |

Interesting but I don't know how that relates to the Heat. "Never underestimate the heart of a champion." - Rudy Tomjanovich |

Still should have been in Team Talk anyways. We weren't interested in Luke that much. Mo Williams makes the Cavs the #1 team in the East. WOW! I actually think that was a dumb move. So they win what, a few more games. He'll definitely help James not have to create everything for them..but still think about this. 43 million dollars over 4 more years. 2010 isn't that far away. The Cavs are a cap room nightmare. Wasted 13 million a year on Wally Szerbiak, and he's got a few years left. Basically...they just lost Lebron James. They will most likely not be able to offer him anymore than he makes now, but Ny or Nj will be able to offer more..probably enough to draw him away. We'll have to see, but this makes me even less certain of James future as a Cavalier.

it relates to the heat not only because the trade involves a player we were trying to acquire but also because it involves a team in our conference getting significantly better.
but i guess if i made this a ridiculous trade scenario thread with us getting a top player for giving away our garbage it would have been better received by the new teenage minded heat fans that swarmed this board ------------------------------------------------- Best 2 guard in the game + best rookie in the game = Miami Heat basketball |

wally sczerbiak is expiring next year. this was a good move for them because they're trying to convince james they are making a competitive team for him so that he has more reason to stay in 2010. and they only had to get rid of two players they weren't interested in keeping long term anyway. ------------------------------------------------- Best 2 guard in the game + best rookie in the game = Miami Heat basketball |

Why is this trade good, because we kept our expirings!! We still have around 30 mil to use by the deadline and another 20 mil I believe (I gotta punch some numbers to be sure) to use next season for another midseason move....West can be used in a sign and trade OR he can sign for the MLE (which adds to our guard depth; Gibson, Williams, West). We also kept AV who's one of our best trading assets.....be sure about one thing, I doubt we are finished making moves this offseason. I know we will make a move by the deadline. Rumors are we're targeting Haslem????
We also have two very very talented rookies by the name of JJ Hickson and Darnell Jackson who played very good ball during the summer league. Hickson made NBA first team Summer League. We also acquired a solid role player in Tarence Kinsey. |

The Heat were interested in Delonte West. Does this make him available?

Yes, however he now has more pressure to take the cavs qualifying offer other wise having to go over seas or risk not getting another contract offer from any other team. If miami guarantees him they will take him, he is as good as HEAT starting pg. |

They are not the first team in the East but they are much better with Mo on the roster. He can blow up for 20-30 points on any given night unlike anyone on last years cavs roster.
So the cavs automatically get better. ------------------------------ "you have a ****ing mark blount picture in your sig , clearly shows you know nothing about basketball. LOL AT YOU BELIEVING MARK BLOUNT IS A SOLUTION FOR THIS TEAM. " - ignorant papidoom |
